Article Summary
In this article, David Cooperrider, explains how ‘Positive
Psychology’ is changing the way we interact and conduct business with people.
Positive strengths interest people and there are several strength-based
approaches which have been successfully introduced to managers to enhance their
efficiency and leadership ability.
David, in this article, is taking these approaches to a whole
new level. He has prepared this framework which has three circles of the
strengths revolution.
Circle 1:
The elevation of strengths
In this circle, David stresses on the importance of identifying
strengths and opportunities. It is important for an organization to have their
full focus on their goals and strengths; they are able to enhance them this
way, which ultimately leads to success.
If we improve our
strengths, our weaknesses become less relevant. It is a handy skill, to find
that one silver lining in the darkest of the clouds, to achieve success in both
personal and professional life. Employees and people in general, excel when
their strengths are amplified and their weaknesses fixed.
Circle 2:
Become a multiplier of strengths, from elevation to configurations
The question arises, how to actually amplify strengths and fix
weaknesses, the answer lies in this circle, which tells us how to create new
macro combinations and configurations of strengths across systems. While
engagement can keep strengths on high, disengagement can cause a drop in these
strengths. Engaged employees are found to be more productive, profitable,
innovative, collaborative, and growth-oriented.
Elevation, success and engagement are interconnected and
reinforce each other in a never ending loop of positive feedback. It is
important to think local but it is more important to think global. To go macro
and not just micro. A broad minded enterprise is always better able to
integrate their people and resources in a way which gives them maximum benefit.
And not only this, it opens door to one more interesting facet of management.
Circle 3:
Positive institutions bringing human strengths to society
Positive
institutions are created to magnify highest human strengths and spreading them
in the society. In this digital world we can spread the message of human
strengths, stories, and solutions worldwide with the click of a button. The
strengths-based change starts with a small shift that makes a huge impact
This circle focuses on the creation of a positive institution
and this is where all the three circles overlap. It is all about creating a
positive organization that enables amplification and refraction of human
strengths. It is not only about vision, management and responsibilities; it is
about combining them in an effective way. It involves bringing outside forces
like customers, investors into the room and creates a sustainable value which
will benefit business. Combining marketing strengths with global issues gives
exceptional results. When the purpose is bigger than organization, success is
guaranteed.
To make an enterprise successful, we have to ask ourselves, are
we harnessing our strengths? Are we being broad minded and thinking on a global
level? Are we harnessing our strengths, and how we are doing it?
The three circles is an exciting opportunity for enterprises to
gain a standing for themselves in current economic framework and achieve
success.
