How to Speak for Yourself - Adam Galinsky

How to Speak for Yourself
Adam Galinsky

Speaking Up
Pushing one’s Interest
Expressing an Opinion
Making an Ambitious Task

Can I correct my Boss when he makes a mistake?
Can I share my deepest insecurities with the person I love?

Range of Behavior

Need to identify your range
Range is not fixed – Expand or Contracts
Your Power determines your range.
Power depends on alternatives. More alternatives more power
Lots of Power widens the range

Power deficiency narrows the range

The Low Power Double Bind
Don’t Speak Up – Go Unnoticed
Do Speak Up – Get Rejected
True especially for women
Gender differences are disguised form of Power Differences

Power may come from within (when I feel powerful)
Or it may come from outside (when others think I am powerful)

Tools for lowering risks in Speaking Up
1.  Advocate for others – Mama Bear Effect
2.  Perspective Taking – Understand the perspective of others – Do not be self-focused
3.  Signal Flexibility – Give Choices
4.  Gain Allies – Seek social support by extending support to others
5.  Ask Others for Advice
6.  Display Expertise – Gain Credibility
7.  Show Passion

Self-Promotion Double Bind
Don’t advertise accomplishments – Go Unnoticed
Advertise accomplishments – Get Rejected – Not be Likable
