3 Tips for Enriching Life Without the Riches by Jakob Barry

Article Summary

Money is not the root of all evil. It is not the root of all happiness either.

When we are focussed exclusively on making money we are truly seeking freedoms. We expect a bigger cash flow will provide special freedom and immunity to life’s pressures.

Money is not the ultimate way to freedom. There are other paths towards enriching life and gaining fulfilment without all the riches. There are three ways in particular that have tremendous positive influence on daily life:

Downsize
Clutter can be a killer of creativity. Downsizing not only renews our living space, but releases us from worrying about how to manage the clutter.

Live a minimalist lifestyle
Minimalist lifestyle helps slowing down the re-accumulation of stuff. Living a ‘less is more’ mindset also instils a feeling that whether money is available or not, a person can not only  survive but thrive on very little.
Do an annual ‘checking in’; putting everything extra in one of two categories, such as sentimental and non-sentimental. Try as hard as possible to minimise the former and get rid of the latter.

Respect yourself
Taking care of and respecting one’s self lead to significant freedoms. This may mean putting up certain boundaries like not staying out too late, or scheduling time for work and play to achieve a healthy balance.

It also includes doing things like eating well, exercising, getting back in touch with old friends and positive influences from the past, and improving current relationships.

The goal should be to live an overall healthier lifestyle and for achieving it you don’t need much money.

Are You Lying to Yourself - Jack Canfield

If you are going to be successful, you have to get out of denial and come to terms with the things that are holding you back from success.
Successful people face negative circumstances squarely
Successful people are more committed to finding out why things are going wrong
You have to face what is not working first
Take the time right now to make a list of what is not working in your life. Choose one action you can take to bring about needed change and then do it.
Jack Canfield (born August 19, 1944[1][2]) is an American author, motivational speaker, seminar leader, corporate trainer, and entrepreneur. 8 Secrets of success - Richard St. John

Why do people succeed? Is it because they're smart? Or are they just lucky? Neither. Analyst Richard St. John condenses years of interviews into an unmissable 3-minute slideshow on the real secrets of success.

Richard St. John was on his way to the TED conference when a girl on the plane asked him, "What really leads to success?" Even though he had achieved some success, he couldn't explain how he did it. So he spent the next ten years researching success and asking over 500 extraordinarily successful people in many fields what helped them succeed. After analyzing, sorting, and correlating millions of words of research, and building one of the most organized databases on the subject of success, he discovered "The 8 Traits Successful People Have in Common" and wrote the bestseller 8 To Be Great.

In his books and talks, he shares a wealth of wisdom from the world's most successful people -- knowledge that can help others succeed in their own way, whether it's escaping poverty, building a business, raising a family, or changing the world.

If a Story moves you, Act on it - Sisonke Msimang

If a Story moves you, Act on it

Sisonke Msimang

Stories are necessary, but they're not as magical as they seem, says writer Sisonke Msimang. In this funny and thoughtful talk, Msimang questions our emphasis on storytelling and spotlights the decline of facts. During a critical time when listening has been confused for action, Msimang asks us to switch off our phones, step away from our screens and step out into the real world to create a plan for justice.

We hear someone's story and feel as if we've done something. We have a sense of catharsis. We might even feel infused with a sense of expertise. But until we take that story and its lessons and translate them into action, particularly the kind that targets systemic change, we are still complicit in the problems that these stories touch on.

The 1 Percent Rule: Why a Few People Get Most of the Rewards

Why do a few people, teams, and organizations enjoy the bulk of the rewards in life?

The Pareto Principle

The majority of rewards always seemed to accrue to a small percentage of people. This idea that a small number of things account for the majority of the results became known as the Pareto Principle or, more commonly, the 80/20 Rule.

The Power of Accumulative Advantage

What begins as a small advantage gets bigger over time. One plant only needs a slight edge in the beginning to crowd out the competition and take over the entire forest.

Winner-Take-All Effects

Situations in which small differences in performance lead to outsized rewards are known as Winner-Take-All Effects.

The margin between good and great is narrower than it seems. What begins as a slight edge over the competition compounds with each additional contest.

The 1 Percent Rule

The 1 Percent Rule states that over time the majority of the rewards in a given field will accumulate to the people, teams, and organizations that maintain a 1 percent advantage over the alternatives. You don't need to be twice as good to get twice the results. You just need to be slightly better.

The 1 Percent Rule is not merely a reference to the fact that small differences accumulate into significant advantages, but also to the idea that those who are one percent better rule their respective fields and industries. Thus, the process of accumulative advantage is the hidden engine that drives the 80/20 Rule.
